Breaking the Gates: Overcoming Spiritual Barriers in Business

Breaking the Gates: Overcoming Spiritual Barriers in Business

The Revelation of Gates and Doorposts

A while ago, as I was reading Deuteronomy 6:9, I was struck by the distinction between the doorpost of a home and the gate: “Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.”

The doorpost represents the personal and private—your home, family, and internal affairs. But the gate is different. The gate is a place of authority, access, and control. It represents the public, the marketplace, and the spiritual battleground where decisions are made. It made me realize that our businesses have gates, and sometimes, unseen forces stand at these gates, preventing growth, success, and establishment.

This revelation led me to study the role of gates in the Bible, and I was reminded of Samson and the city gates of Gaza (Judges 16:1-3). Samson, filled with supernatural strength, tore the city gates from their foundations and carried them away. This act was more than physical; it was a prophetic demonstration of breaking spiritual barriers. For many business owners, there are unseen gates—spiritual strongholds, demonic opposition, and invisible gatekeepers—standing against progress. God is calling us to tear down those gates in order to enter new dimensions of influence and success.

The Battle at the Business Gate

Some businesses struggle, not because of a lack of strategy, skill, or effort, but because they face spiritual opposition at the gate. Some business owners pour in time, money, and energy, yet their results do not match their effort. Others experience success but later hit a wall of stagnation—a place where growth seems impossible despite all attempts to move forward. These are signs that a gate is resisting access to the next level.

“This is what the Lord says to His anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I take hold of to subdue nations before him and to strip kings of their armor, to open doors before him so that gates will not be shut: I will go before you and will level the mountains; I will break down gates of bronze and cut through bars of iron.” (Isaiah 45:1-3)

God is in the business of breaking iron gates and removing strongholds so that His people can take dominion in the areas He has called them to. If you’ve been feeling blocked, delayed, or restricted, it’s time to discern the gate standing against your business and take action.

When the Land Looks Good, but the Water is Bad

Another key revelation about business barriers comes from 2 Kings 2:19-22. The people of Jericho told Prophet Elisha: “Look, our lord, this town is well situated, as you can see, but the water is bad and the land is unproductive.” This describes many businesses today. On the surface, everything looks great—a strong brand, good products, a prime location—but the inner workings are poisoned. The water represents the business’s foundation, and the land represents productivity and results. If the foundation is compromised, the results will be poor, no matter how great the setup appears.

How to Identify Bad Water in Business:

  • Constant financial struggles despite good products and services.

  • Unexplained high employee turnover or a toxic work culture.

  • Clients and partnerships falling apart at the last moment.

  • Lack of peace and clarity about business direction.

  • Sudden stagnation or inability to scale, despite effort.

Elisha did something unusual; he asked for a new bowl and salt, then poured it into the water source, declaring: “This is what the Lord says: ‘I have healed this water. Never again will it cause death or make the land unproductive.’” (2 Kings 2:21)

This was a prophetic act; it wasn’t the salt itself that purified the water, but the word of God spoken over it. Similarly, many business owners need to go back to the source and identify the root issues affecting their growth. Sometimes, the solution is not another marketing strategy but a spiritual reset.
